As the weather warms up, your pets are probably spending more time outside and may be bringing some uninvited guests back in with them – fleas and ticks!

As a long-time pet owner, I know from firsthand experience that there are few things worse than finding a flea on your dog, except maybe finding one on yourself!  Although vets recommend treating pets with flea and tick preventative year-round, I know I’m not the only one guilty of skipping a month (or two, or three) throughout the year to cut costs.

Good news?vet grade quality generic flea and tick medications are now widely available at a fraction of cost of name brands like Frontline Plus and Bayer K9 Advantix at local retailers such as Walmart, Sam’s Club and Rite Aid, so finding  year-round treatment is a bit more financially feasible.

If you DO spot a flea – act quickly:

  • Remove fleas from your pet’s coat with a fine-toothed flea comb, and drop in soapy water to drown them

  • Thoroughly vacuum the entire house – twice!

  • Wash all bedding and toys in hot, soapy water

Here’s to a flea-free spring and summer!
