Do you remember your first pet? When asked, most people can reminisce fondly about their first pet, whether it was an old family cat or a Christmas day puppy. There is something magical about animals for children, and I have always felt lucky that I was able to grow up with pets.
To celebrate this special bond, there is now a National Kids & Pets Day, which falls on April 26th this year! The National Kids & Pets Day Website contains some tips for keeping kids safe with pets and introducing your pet to a new baby. Having pets in the home can be very beneficial for children; it helps them develop an appreciation and love for living beings, and it can protect them from developing allergies and asthma!
That being said, I would also like to emphasize how important it is to keep your pet healthy and free of fleas & ticks if they are around small children with developing immune systems. Believe it or not, there are several serious illnesses, called zoonotic diseases, which people can actually catch from their pets. Access to affordable pet healthcare will benefit us all – pets and people alike!
“There is nothing more pure, more at peace, more perfect, than the love a child and their child share together.” – Colleen Paige, National Kids & Pets Day founder
